I’ve started to love posting my weekly recounts. It’s become like writing in a journal for me. This week was busy and long but I got through it and that’s all that matters.

We started Genetics in Biology, on Monday. Our teacher’s computer wouldn’t turn on, so she had to ask another teacher to come and help with that. In the meantime, she gave us sheets to help us make notes from the textbook. She also came around to look at the study aide that was a part of our article presentation assignment. Once she gave us her feedback, she went to the blackboard and started to explain the story behind the discovery of the structure of DNA. Look up what Maurice Wilkins did to Rosalind Franklin. What a douchebag. In Sociology, we started the next unit, Crime. We talked about how crime is categorized in Sociology and then we got time to work on our group essay outline. In Math, we took up homework from the previous week. In Chemistry, we did a problem set based on thermodynamics.

Tuesday was a sweet day. n Sociology, we continued with the types of crimes and what the average criminal looks like. According to the statistics provided by our textbook, the average criminal in Canada is an African Canadian, 19-year-old male from the low socio-economic class. I don’t agree with that but that is what the statistics say. (I believe the average criminal looks like a Caucasian, white-collared, middle-aged man who thinks he can get away with anything because he can pay for a competent lawyer). In Biology, we did an activity to make the antiparallel structure of DNA using Marshmallows as the nitrogenous bases, Swedish Berries as the phosphate groups and Sour Patch Kids as the ribose sugars. That was why Tuesday was a sweet day. In Chemistry, we got a little more time to finish our problem set. Then we moved onto the next chapter, Kinetics. In Math, we started 7.5, Solving Linear Trig. Functions. It’s by far the easiest section in the textbook.

Wednesday was a long day. In Biology, we had a unit test for Chapter 3 to 5 or Unit 2, Metabolic Processes. It was quite long, and I barely finished in time. In Sociology, we studied the Canadian Justice System. We talked about the 3 components: Law Enforcement, Court System and Correction Systems. It was a really fun class. At lunch, we had an SAC meeting to discuss plans for the upcoming Semi-Formal. In Math, we studied the last part of the chapter about solving quadratic trigonometric equations. Then we had a quiz for the first 4 sections of the chapter. In Chemistry, we had a supply teacher. So, I finished my other work.

On Thursday, we started the next unit in Sociology, Technology. We discussed the sociological definition of technology: Creation of tools or objects that extend our natural abilities and alter our social environment. We talked about the pros and cons of inventions and technology we use in our daily lives. In Biology, we took up our test. She marked 50, 90-mark tests in less than 24 hours. I did very well; only made 5 mistakes on the test. In Chemistry, we took up our problem sets and then discussed the factors affecting rates of reactions. In Math, we had a supply teacher, so I finished my Chemistry homework and did the Math review our teacher left for us.

TGIF. In Biology, we talked about the theories of DNA replication, the differences between semi-conservative and conservative replication and the studies that led to these theories. In Sociology, we did a fun activity. Our teacher brought in 6 groups of items from the past that have changed over time. We had to see how that evolution has affected us on a micro level and society on a macro level. The groups were: Typewriter to electronic typewriter to the first computers to laptops; a chunky video camera, surprisingly used for home videos; 8Tracks to Stereo cassette players to Discmans to iPods; Cameras for Queen Elizabeth I’s time to modern DSLRs; Flip-phones to iPhones and lastly a TV radio. At lunch, we had a UCC meeting. In Math, we took up the review questions. In Chemistry, we talked about the effect of temperature and catalysts on reaction rates, potential energy and activation energy.

It was a wonderful 12th week. I couldn’t have asked for a better one. I hope your week was wonderful too. You can get in touch with me by emailing me at rueshi25@gmail.com. -Aarushi
